Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told me late in the season on 105.3 The Fan that he never thought kicker Nick Folk was fully healthy. The dude has off-season hip surgery. There was that thing with his holder, etc.

Kickers are a quirky lot. I get that. I figured – being that Folk is a former draft pick with a recent appearance in the Pro Bowl – the Cowboys would stash him away on injured reserve and try to re-boot him come 2010.

Then they cut him. And yesterday the New York Jets scooped up Dallas’ trash, signing Folk to a one-year contract.

Um, considering the utter failure of Folk replacement Shaun Suisham late last season, where the Cowboys go from here?

Maybe David Buehler. Perhaps Connor Hughes? Fore sure Chris Boniol.

What’s that I say? Yep, the Cowboys have again turned to Boniol, but not as a kicker but rather a kicking consultant. He’s the most accurate kicker in franchise history (87 percent) and once kicked seven field goals in one game. Can’t hurt, right?

Ideally, Buehler will be the man. The Cowboys are already invested in him and he proved to have superior leg strength last season with an NFL-leading 29 kick-off touchbacks.
