You’re tired of meaningless, pre-season games. Tired of hollow, irrelevant complaining and waffling from Greg Ellis. What you, the Cowboys fan, need is a time-warp to September 9. Until then, a couple of options.
If you want to meet ‘n’ greet the 2007 team all spiffied up in their formals, get you and your wallet to the Hotel-Intercontinental tomorrow morning for the team’s annual kickoff luncheon. In the afternoon, mosey over to your nearest bookstore and pick up Greatest Team Ever, the new offering from long-time local sports icon Norm Hitzges and photographer Ron St. Angelo. The book, a 176-page stroll down memory lane, was unveiled last week at a Texas Stadium party attended by former Cowboys Daryl Johnston, Nate Newton, Chad Hennings and the omnipresent Joe Avezzano.
It details the ’91-’96 Cowboys, winners of three Super Bowls, home to four no-brainer Hall of Famers (Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Larry Allen) and supplier to TV analysts on every stinking network. Says former voice of the NFL Pat Summerall in the book, “Of the dynasties over the last 50 years, I have to go with those Dallas Cowboys as the best of them all. They had it all … and then some.”
Of course, if you’re short on change and long on nostalgia — what else can you buy for 88 cents?! — you can always settle for this ’93 classic. Or, if you’re salivating for details about the dynasty’s dark side in the white house, be patient. I hear this guy has a tell-all book forthcoming late in ’07. –Richie Whitt
