I rip (make that ripped, past tense) Wade Phillips all the time, but, um, looks like Minnesota Vikings’ head coach Brad Childress needs a history lesson.
On Dec. 28, 1975, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to frigid Metropolitan Stadium for a playoff game against the Vikings. Trailing 14-10 with less than :30 left, quarterback Roger Staubach dropped back, said a “Hail Mary” and let ‘er fly. Down at Minnesota’s 7-ish yard line, a certain Cowboys’ receiver pushed off got separation from Vikings’ cornerback Nate Wright and caught a 50-yard touchdown for a shocking, scintillating 17-14 victory.
Hail Mary is one of the most famous plays in NFL lore. The receiver was Drew Pearson.
