All week, ever since he re-injured a herniated disk in his back against the Redskins, Cowboys fans have waited for final word on whether Tony Romo will play in Sunday’s season-deciding matchup with Philadelphia.
Now we know.
Despite some brief glimmers of hope — vague pronouncements from Jerry Jones, a boilerplate vote of confidence from Jason Witten, reports that Romo’s back was improving — and top-notch obfuscation by Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, Romo is officially out.
ESPN Dallas reports that Romo underwent surgery this morning to repair the herniated disk in his back and will sit out.

“He’ll start his road to recovery, sooner rather than later,” Garrett said. “We’re completely confident he will rehab and come back at 100 percent.”
That puts the Cowboys’ season in the hands of backup Kyle Orton, who we can only hope has the wherewithal to pass on the Jack Daniel’s this weekend.
