It’s no secret that First Baptist Church of Dallas’ pastor, Robert Jeffress is a lightning rod for controversy because of his less-than-PC remarks on homosexuality. And Mormonism. And Islam.

But it seems that Tim Tebow, who was scheduled to appear at the local megachurch as part of the grand opening of its $130 million expansion, just got the memo.

In a series of Tweets, Tebow announced this morning that he will not, in fact, be visiting First Baptist.

“While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ’s unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance,” he wrote. “I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day.”

$30,000

That’s all very vague, but one imagines it might have had something to do with headlines like this one from the Huffington Post: “Tim Tebow, Jets Quarterback, To Speak At Virulently Anti-Gay, Anti-Semitic Church First Baptist Dallas.

That doesn’t mesh so well with the whole message of “unconditional love.”
