Monday night, a group of Washington, D.C., activists let Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and his wife, Heidi Cruz, know just how unhappy they were about the senator’s strong support for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Protesters surrounded the Cruzes at Fiola, an upscale Italian restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue near the U.S. Capitol. From video of the incident, it appears that the senator and his wife have already finished their meal.

“We believe survivors,” the crowd chants, as Cruz, wearing a jacket, and his wife get up and leave the restaurant.

The fight over Kavanaugh’s nomination has become one of the biggest issues in Cruz’s re-election battle with U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Cruz is standing by his longtime friend despite allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against Kavanaugh, who denies them. O’Rourke believes Kavanaugh is not qualified to serve on the court.

During the protest, Cruz responds to taunts about O’Rourke being more attractive than he is and Kavanaugh being his “best friend.”

“God bless you,” Cruz repeatedly tells the protesters.

Tuesday morning, O’Rourke criticized the protests, saying that the Cruz family “deserves to be treated with respect.”
