That’s what Radar Online is reporting, so we’re taking it with a pillar of salt. Nonetheless, says here that “the tech entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner is set to offer $625 million to buy the Chicago Cubs from Tribune Co., according to a source familiar with the matter. ‘Mark is desperate to buy the Cubs,’ says the source. ‘He wants this so bad.'”
Makes sense, I guess: A few weeks back, when TheStreet.com asked about his interest in buying the Cubs, Cuban didn’t say no. What he said was: “I’m always interested in iconic teams or teams from my hometown, but it’s a ‘nice to do,’ not a ‘have to do.'” Sounded like a no, but with a yessy aftertaste. And there was this piece in May 2006, in which Cuban sorta hinted at his interest. (Then again, two years ago, word was he was gonna buy the Pittsburgh Pirates.) If you’re a Cubs fan, though, I guess you could always sign this. Dunno the point, but, whatever. –Robert Wilonsky
Update: Cuban e-mailed Unfair Park at 4:42 p.m. with the following: “Not buying the cubs. No offer made.” So, there ya have it.
