Apparently, the only thing standing between SMU and a “perennial top-25 golf program” is a good place to practice. Hence, this morning’s announcement that one week from today, the university will officially break ground on the SMU Payne Stewart Golf Learning Center at the Dallas Athletic Club. It sounds like quite the clubhouse, as it comes with “two indoor hitting bays with state-of-the-art video swing analysis and a media-enhanced conference meeting room” and “a four-hole short game course planned by Chet Williams of Nicklaus Design that will create a multitude of practice stations for every conceivable lie or situation.” For starters.

As the conceptual rendering provided in the press release is a bit postage-stampy, Brad Sutton in the university’s Athletic Media Relations Office was kind enough to forward along this larger drawing, which I will now use whenever I need to conjure a “happy place.” And I’ve never even played golf. Ever. But I am willing to learn.
