Earlier this week, the Houston Astros called up Max Stassi from the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. On Tuesday, he made his Major League Debut against the Rangers, going a solid 2-3. On Wednesday, he faced Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers. Things did not go very well.
On the SportsCenter replay, fast-forward to about the :12 second mark on the video and you’ll see what we mean. It’s the top of the eighth inning, bases loaded, two outs. Scheppers, working from the stretch, throws a first-pitch, 96 mph fastball straight into Stassi’s face. To get a better sense of how badly that must have hurt, watch MLB.com’s slow-motion, front-on shot.
Stassi was taken to the hospital, where he was kept for observation overnight. On the bright side, Stassi’s free trip to first drove in his first Major League RBI.
