UPDATE, 1/21/2026, 10:00 a.m.: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has activated state emergency response resources ahead of expected winter weather this weekend. As of Wednesday morning, the latest forecasts call for up to 65 consecutive hours of below-freezing temperatures, stretching across Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.

“Based on current forecasts, the State of Texas is acting to ensure Texans have the resources they need before severe winter weather impacts communities across Texas,” said Abbott in a statement. “As temperatures could drop below freezing and regions of Texas face snow, ice, and freezing rain, it is crucial that Texans remain weather-aware, check DriveTexas.org before traveling, and heed the guidance of state and local officials. I thank emergency management personnel and first responders for working tirelessly to keep Texans safe.”

It was bound to happen. The temps have been low enough and even though the Old Farmer’s Almanac suggested we might see some icy stuff by now, it seems as though North Texas might finally get hit with some sort of winter precipitation.

We know this, not because of the weather app on our phones or from local news broadcasts, mind you. We know this because we just checked X and saw a post that, really, tells us all we need to know.

When WFAA weather guru Pete Delkus posts the illustration of him, covered in ice, wearing a smoking jacket while chomping on a stogie, we know it’s about to get downright polar around here.

That post just gave us the overall vibe expectation. Some of us might want to know more specifically what to expect, though. Delkus has you covered there, too.

“The strongest cold snap of the season arrives this weekend,” Delkus wrote on X on Tuesday morning. “Temps look to recover towards the end of the month. Be sure to make the necessary winter weather preps for your home before the weekend.”

Indeed, as chilly as things have been around Dallas for the past several days, this weekend looks to dive well beyond that. According to WFAA, Saturday will have a high of 30 degrees and a low of 26, along with a 70% chance of wintry precipitation. Sunday will bring more of the same with a high of 31 degrees and a low of 15.

The trusty folks at the National Weather Service in Fort Worth have a hunch things will be less than optimal over the weekend as well.

“Confidence is increasing regarding the potential for a significant intrusion of Arctic air and impactful wintry precipitation from Friday into the upcoming weekend,” the NWS website reads. “Potentially significant impacts to travel and infrastructure are possible across all of North and Central Texas due to a combination of freezing rain/ice as well as sleet and snow, while temperatures stay below freezing from late Friday through Sunday.”

We suppose we’re due. A winter storm hit Dallas in early January 2025, dumping about 2.5 inches of snow on North Texas, as freezing temperatures returned before the end of the month.

For this year, the NWS hammered its point home by warning, “Plan ahead for travel impacts and power outages, and monitor forecasts in the coming days for up-to-date information.”
