Charles Hatley’s not giving up on his quest to join the U.S. Olympic boxing team.
Here’s what you need to know about Charles Hatley: The dude’s got a punch named after him. It’s a step back cross to the chin, says here. Ever since that story came out, we’ve been watching Hatley and his quest to make the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 2008. Hatley, of the Oak Cliff Boxing Club, fights in the 152-pound weight class, and last year he pulled off a major upset when he defeated the 2005 World Championship silver medalist Magomed Nurudinov of Belarus.
Hatley lost in the finals of the 2006 National PAL Championships, which would have automatically qualified him for the 2007 USA Boxing National Championships and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Box-Offs. But he’s still hoping to make the 2008 Olympic team. He’s fighting this weekend at the state Golden Gloves Tournament, which began Thursday and continues tonight and tomorrow night at John Justin Arena, located in the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. –Jesse Hyde
