A year ago former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith shoved aside his diamonds and poo-pooed all over the team, predicting a 7-9 record because, in part, they lacked leadership. Yet there was Smith last January, sitting in owner Jerry Jones’ suite at Cowboys Stadium and leading the towel-waving during Dallas’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
And now?
“I think they have the potential to get to the Super Bowl,” Smith said yesterday during a national conference call in advance of his enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next month.
Though they have an unproven left tackle, a new free safety and a kicker yet to attempt an NFL field goal, the Cowboys are the trendy pick to play Super Bowl XLV in their own stadium come February.

Last year Smith – like a lot of us – questioned quarterback Tony Romo’s leadership. So what did taking every snap, making the Pro Bowl and winning in the post-season do for his reputation?
