Attorney Fred Baron, Dallas Dems’ fave bread-maker
The Houston Chronicle this morning tallies up the state’s biggest political donors in 2007 — “a year in which there were no high-profile races and only a few constitutional amendments on the ballot” — and second only to Houston home builder Bob Perry on the list of big-money givers is Dallas attorney Fred Baron. Perry doled out a little more than $1.08 million last year, according to records filed with the Texas Ethics Commission, with a majority of those pennies rolling to the right.
Barron came in second at around $969,000, with most of that money going toward the Texas Democratic Trust, the 2-year-old trust geared toward putting the Democrats back in the W column. Says Baron in the Chronicle, ‘The idea here is to get the second voice out in Texas. For too long, we have heard only from Republican and right-wing organizations.” Also noted in the story: Monied Dallas Dems are giving like never before, among them Garrett and Cecilia Boone (founders of The Container Store), Lee and Amy Fikes and Naomi Aberly. –Robert Wilonsky
