I know that those who contribute to this blog–including me–have not been overly kind to bands of the emo variety. Sorry, but shows that start at 6:30 p.m. in Plano (especially on a Tuesday) just don’t seem to warrant the attention of a weekend event at a venue in Dallas.
Ah, but that’s not the case tonight at The Door in Plano..
Omaha’s Go Crash Audio channels all the right characteristics of Cheap Trick while still appeasing the emo guys who paint their fingernails black. Guitarist/vocalist Deryck Stanek invests his songs with more authentic passion than just about the entire Vans Warped line up. And Stanek also has a good sense of humor–another thing missing from many of emo’s most popular pouters. The band’s debut album, With Wings and Radar, features several gems, including “Never Trust a Man that Comes Equipped with A Fake Smile and A Pen in His Hand.”
Now if that’s not sage advice, I don’t know what is.

Also on tonight’s bill is A Kidnap in Color, a Chicago band that also cleverly deviates from the standard emo approach. Employing a nice touch of cabaret, songs like “Miss Scarlet, in the Bathroom, with the Revolver” and “Lust be a Lady” are campy and catchy.
