It’s been over a week since Branoofunck, the duo of Medz and Menace the DJ, was on the cover.
It was my first cover feature for the paper, and I was honored that the guys allowed me to interview them and tell their story at Armoury D.E., where it all began. I want to give a special shout-out to “D” at Kutinfed Barbershop for putting me on and telling me to go check out their Sunday Sessions. It changed my life forever.
Once the cover was released, Branoofunck promoted it on social media and spread the word. It almost felt like they were pushing their own mixtape, like the dedicated hip-hop fans they are. They posted screenshots of the story, shared the link to our circulation to inform fans on where to grab one and called the paper a “collector’s edition,” which I especially loved as this was a Dallas hip-hop story unique to their moment right now.
“The city has spoken! The best thing cookin in DFW!” they wrote, telling their fans to pick up a copy. “Much love Branoofam.”

The city had a lot to say. After the guys posted it on Facebook and Instagram, they received a flood of congratulations.

Medz got it framed by the group’s merch correspondent, Janette. So cool. Medrick Greely / Facebook

I even posted some videos that my girlfriend made of outtakes from the cover story, where they talked about the legends they opened for and getting a co-sign from Raekwon.
I think the best part of it all was that they celebrated with a cover release party.

They brought a few newspapers from the newsstands for their fans to take home with them. While celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday, I brought some friends to check out Branoofunck on Sunday, who hadn’t seen it before. They had a blast and Menace gave me a shout-out. I felt the love that night.
If you haven’t read the story yet, you can read it here. We teased a part of the story where Menace breaks down the origin story of their name, inspired by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s “Brand New Funk.”
Branoofunck is back at it again this weekend. Go check them out. Branoofunck at their residency at the Armoury D.E. Mike Brooks
