No matter what the season or climate, White Rock Lake is always a serene destination in our otherwise bustling city. This year the lake turns 100, an anniversary that’s been celebrated this summer with a festival, guided tours and plenty of champagne toasts at sunset. White Rock Lake Museum is also celebrating with a special exhibition of photos, White Rock Lake: An Inspiring Work of Art, which features this peaceful photo of the lake during a winter snowstorm.
Maybe it’s because we’re in the midst of a steamy summer that Brian Hiltz’s “Snowy Pier” is so compelling, or maybe it’s because the photo evokes a feeling of solitude in an area that’s typically speckled with people. What’s absent is almost as important as what’s there, and it’s as if this pier, enveloped in the fresh snow, is leading to some refuge from the every day pains, maybe even a balmy summer day.
White Rock Lake: An Inspiring Work of Art runs through October 1. Call 214-670-8749 or visit bathhousecultural.com for more information.
