Good news: Your Dallas Cowboys will play in Super Bowl XLV right here in our back yard, Feb. 6, 2011 in Arlington.

Bad news: They’ll lose to the New York Jets and – giggle – quarterback Mark Sanchez.

So sayeth The Sporting News in its 2010 Pro Football Yearbook, which hits newstands this week. The Jets, of course, haven’t won a Super Bowl since Joe Namath’s famous guarantee and the Cowboys haven’t been to the bowl since Barry Switzer was in charge.

Picking America’s Team against a team from the nation’s largest media market is obviously good marketing sense. But is it good football IQ?

SN predicts the Cowboys will go 12-4, matching the Vikings and Falcons for the NFC’s best record. The Jets’ forecast: 13-3, one win more than the Colts and Chargers. The magazine has Dallas easily winning the NFC East (Giants 9-7, Eagles 9-7, Redskins 6-10) and beating Minnesota in the NFC Championship Game.

Two years ago, remember, Sports Ilustrated‘s Peter King picked the Cowboys to win the Super Bowl and Dallas went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.

Considering Dallas’ Super Bowl drought, would just getting to the season’s final game make it a successful year?
