He wasn’t exactly invited to any summer summits at Dwyane Wade’s house. And he wasn’t even atop the Dallas Mavericks’ wish list.

But the signing of forward Tim Thomas is, quietly, a big, good deal for the Mavs.

Why? Because Thomas can shoot. From distance. No, he’s not a 20-minute-a-night guy, but when Dirk Nowitzki needs a breather, the 6-foot-10 power forward can provide quality backup minutes.

Thomas, likely to sign a one-year contract today, was missed last year. He played only 18 games, remember, before leaving the team to take care of his ailing wife, Tricia, and the couple’s three young children.

Apparently Tricia’s health has at least stabilized and – voila – the Mavericks have improved.

In 13 NBA seasons he’s averaged 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds. And, if memory serves correct from playoff battles against the Phoenix Suns, the guy brings a little swagger to the court.
